Ultraspazio expands its unconventional containers for Turin exhibitions and hosts “Faces,” Domenico Poponi’s solo exhibition at Palazzo Costa Carrù della Trinità (Turin, Via San Francesco da Paola, 17), from March 31 to April 30. The exhibition kicks off with a panel discussion entitled “Fifteen Shots”-on March 31 from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.-designed to present the path of the artist, born in 1968, who has been struggling with Parkinson’s disease for 15 years and has found a new way of expression in art.

“Fifteen Shots” is the gateway to the touching journey of 27 works, a reflection of the inner and physical battle imposed by the complexity of a neurodegenerative disease, with slow and inexorable evolution, mainly involving the control of movement and balance. “Fifteen rounds” sums up precisely this struggle, inspired by that of the ring (where 15 is the maximum number of rounds), which Poponi fights by always getting back up, aware that he is destined to lose, but determined not to cede easy victory to his opponent, the disease. It will be Poponi himself who will narrate his match, together with physiotherapist Alice Bergamini and psychologist Sara Vengust, physicians who have been treating him, with whom Domenico is constantly looking for solutions that will allow him to better manage critical moments and that can also come in handy for other Parkinson’s patients.

Using a painting technique that favors the use of hands rather than brushes, Poponi creates warm and enveloping sources of light, a tangible expression of the will to live. The canvases accompany on a journey of deep emotion, through the evolution of his journey as a man and an artist. They, in fact, tell of his experience and his choice to never give up.

The tour is divided into four stages: the moments of his rebirth, when he discovered he could return to his old love of art and try his hand at painting.

“Art is also born and expressed through the interpretation of the viewer,” the painter explains. “And from my canvases emerge faces of individuals that are transformed according to the point of observation, which can be decoded differently depending on the mood of the viewer. Hence the title of the exhibition, Faces, which finds an ideal space in Palazzo Costa Carrù, made of magic, beauty, history, art and the future.”
